Adaptive Plating Technologies

EXPANDING THE RANGE OF POLYMER AND MATERIAL CHOICES.

Historically, designers and engineers have been forced to choose from a narrow range of plastics that were plateable. These plastics often offer less performance than the customer needs. Additionally, when selective plating was required, defining specific areas for plating was limited to masking-off non-plated areas of plastics. SAT Plating believes this approach is far too restrictive for our customers’ needs and is not cost effective.

At SAT Plating, we have developed a suite of Adaptive Plating Technologies that enable clients to radically expand their approach to product design, material selection and production methodologies. Our technologies and processes can be applied to a broad range of polymers and materials including: plastics, films, fibers, membranes, fabrics, ceramics and glass. Notwithstanding the material choice, our Adaptive Plating Technologies ensure:

High-definition – precise selectivity of desired areas for plating of conductive surfaces, antennas, functional and appearance coatings

Repeatability – ensuring high-quality and scale of production volumes

Cost Savings – through expanded range of polymer and material choices and potential elimination of production steps

SAT’s ADAPTIVE PLATING TECHNOLOGIES INCLUDE:

Surface Activation® Processing

SAT’s proprietary processing enables us to plate previously difficult-to-plate plastics without using abrasive blasting or hazardous chemical etching of the substrate. This technology expands the range of plastic choices available to component designers and engineers in the manufacturing process.

Most importantly, Surface Activation® Processing does not alter the physical shape of the component or damage the plastic, and the treatment is permanent.

SAT's proprietary Surface Activation® Processing creates best-in-class metal plating deposits for:

  • Structural, functional and appearance finishes
  • Superior adhesion of plated finishes
  • More reliable product performance through time, temperature and other environmental variations

SelectPlate™

SAT Plating uses specially formulated inks to permanently mask selected areas and allow precise plating of customer-defined areas. Inks can be custom formulated to match virtually any RGB color combination.

Our proprietary SelectPlate™ inks are permanent, allow for high-definition and can be decorative in color and design. Furthermore, thin-film plastic can be printed and vacuum-formed prior to plating without affecting the decorative coating. Non-masked areas are then plated, with functional and/or appearance coatings, as specified.

The SelectPlate™ process has been proven successful when used for thin-films, flexible circuits, embedded antennas and battery applications.

Multi-Shot Molded Plastic Processing

Multi-shot plastic components have enabled manufacturers to radically expand their approach to product design, material selection and production methodologies. Component parts that are injection molded with plateable and non-plateable plastic resins result in a natural masking effect.

SAT Plating can metalize select areas of clients’ component parts with functional and/or metalized deposits. In combination with Surface Activation® Processing, difficult-to-plate plastics can also be considered for multi-shot part construction.

Printable Plating

A base coat of proprietary chemistry is applied to specific areas of the component requiring plating. The component is subsequently plated with functional and/or appearance coatings.
