During these seven videos, Dr. Johnson demonstrates multiple aspects of essay construction as she uses the Basic Essay Skeleton to teach the five paragraph essay to urban students. The Basic Essay Skeleton can be downloaded on this site under the Free Downloads tab.
Preparation
Dr. Johnson passes corrected homework essays from the previous essay construction lesson to the students.
Introduction Paragraph
Dr. Johnson teaches the students how to write the first paragraph in the essay and the importance of the thesis sentence.
First Body Paragraph
The students learn how to construct the second paragraph by creating the first topic sentence from the thesis sentence and how to add supporting sentences.
Second Body Paragraph
The students learn how to construct the third paragraph by deriving the second topic sentence from the thesis sentence, then they add supporting sentences.
Third Body Paragraph
The students construct the fourth paragraph by using the methods used in the second and third paragraphs.
Conclusion Paragraph
Dr. Johnson demonstrates how to create the final paragraph by using summary sentences and the construction of the conclusion sentence which is based on the thesis sentence.
Aftermath
During this brief homeroom session, Dr. Johnson takes attendance during the intercom announcements as a few students talk quietly while others return desks to their original location and erase the whiteboard as some students complete their essays and/or copy the essay homework assignment.
