The Village of Milford was incorporated in 1869. Today, the Village of Milford lies within Milford Township. The creation of the Lower Mill Pond, Upper Mill Pond and the Hubbard Pond were very important for Milford Township. These ponds created waterpower for factories and the Hubbard Pond allowed the Township to generate electricity. They used hydropower to become one of the first communities to have electric lights in 1892. In 1893, the telephone came to Milford Township and made communication much easier for the Township to prosper. In 1939, Ford built a plant and two hydro electric stations which allowed people to keep up with their agricultural work while they worked in the factories. The Village of Milford is a good example of the common rural mill community in southern Michigan from its founding in 1832, through the period from 1871 to World War I when business, industry and residence construction was spurred by the coming of the railroad, and the period from World War I to 1950 when the coming of the automobile spurred further growth.
