The documentary "When I Need to Smile" opens with musicians singing the praises of Gretchen Carhartt Valade, Board Member of Carhartt Clothing, Mack Avenue Records and The Detroit Jazz Festival.

Part jazz concert, part storytelling, the film includes great vintage photos and fabulous jazz performance footage. It explores Valade's life though interviews with Valade, her son, various business partners, musicians and many others whose lives Vadale has touched.

The film captures Valade's generous spirit, quick wit, and the indelible mark she's made on the jazz scene in Detroit and worldwide.
