Artist Erin Brott-Holtzman

Ferndale-based artist and visual arts educator Erin Brott-Holtzman created her latest paintings to celebrate the inherent tranquility of nature while tapping into the therapeutic qualities of breathwork--a conscious control of breathing to improve our whole state of being. Brott-Holtzman will be discussing these new works and so much more on Thursday, June 10, where she’ll be live on Zoom for a virtual Q&A session hosted by the Ferndale Library. 

Brott-Holtzman’s latest paintings comprise her new exhibition, “Inhale~Exhale,” currently on display inside the Ferndale Library’s west entrance hall. There’s a virtual walkthrough of the exhibition featured on the library’s YouTube page, but art connoisseurs can view the pieces in person starting Monday, June 7, when the library opens for limited indoor services.

Starting in June, the Ferndale Library will host another virtual series of Summer Reading Programs for all ages, where patrons can participate in a reading challenge for the chance to win prizes.


Gravity Art Fair & Skate Park Contest

The Gravity Art Fair will feature more than 50 local artists selling their wares, ranging from art prints and original illustrations, streetwear, jewelry, accessories, and skateboard deck art.
The Ferndale Parks & Rec Dept Skate Park Contest, produced by Modern Skate & Surf, will take place from 12 pm to 6 pm and include skateboarding, scooter, inline skating and BMX competitions with three age groups per contest — 9-12, 13-17, and 18 and older.
 
Juneteenth Celebration

The City of Ferndale, Royal Oak Township and the Ferndale Area District Library are excited to announce the celebration of Juneteenth, a national holiday commemorating June 19, 1865, when emancipation finally reached the last confederate state. This event will feature poetry readings by Ferndale Public School students, storytelling by Skip Mongo, along with performances by Motown Dream Team Dancers, Drummer Demetrius Thomas, Joshua James’ Prince Project and Nadir Omowale.

The stories begin each Tuesday when these seven artists gather to make art.
Experiment and exploration are key plans for the day. Happy accidents are essential as these printmakers meet at the BBAC ( Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center) to work and play.
 
 “We are all charmed by the experimental aspects of the medium as well as the many techniques that printmaking uses to achieve the results,” says Laura Whitesides Host.

OCC’ s Free Five-Week Pre-Apprenticeship Program

Begins June 21

Program Designed to Close Manufacturing Skills Gap and Help Students Qualify for Jobs and Apprenticeships with Area Employers
 
The free five-week program provides students with basic manufacturing skills such as shop math and blueprint reading with an opportunity to earn the OSHA 10 and Mike Rowe WORKS Employability Skills certifications. Students will also participate in interview preparation, including resume writing and mock job interviews and will receive a variety of networking opportunities with potential employers to increase their chances at a manufacturing career or apprenticeship through OCC’s Apprenticeship program.
