Expanded Sales, Use and Withholding (SUW) Tax Relief Passes Senate

At the urging of the Michigan Chamber, the Michigan Department of Treasury announced late last month that businesses who had taken advantage of the Department’s SUW deferral for payments due in March, April and May could take part in a 6-month installment plan to get caught up on their SUW liabilities.
Small Business Restart Grants Approved by the Legislature

The Michigan House and Senate approved $100 million to be spent on grants to help small businesses as they reopen.

Oakland County Executive David Coulter will seek $32 million to help retail stores, restaurants and personal service businesses impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Coulter will ask the Oakland County Board of Commissioners for the allocation to create the Oakland Together Economic Recovery Grants to provide an immediate infusion of capital to local businesses in the region.

If approved, the program would begin July 1. Funds would come from CARES Act and could help support payroll expenses, rent, mortgage payments, utility expenses and other routine business expenses.

“This small business community is a key driver to having a successful economy in Oakland County,” Coulter said. “As our small businesses reopen, we want to ensure they have the resources to keep their customers safe and recover from the downturn."
